Stephanie Martinez, Road Captain

When Stephanie began her cycling journey she was so terrified of riding on the road and clipping in, she almost sold her brand new bike! Luckily, with the help of her teammates in the Bicycle Sport Shop Club, she was able to overcome those challenges. Now she rides road, mountain bike, and gravel.

Stephanie has been a club member since October of 2017 and through her club affiliation has volunteered and organized countless training rides, Women’s Ride Days, and weekly rides from the various Bicycle Sport Shop locations. Her passion for helping others shines through by consistently showing beginners how to safely ride in groups. Her motto is, “sometimes you can’t get over the fear, and you just have to do it afraid.” When it comes to cycling, Stephanie has one goal in mind, and that is to get more people on bikes! So what time is it? It’s TIME TO RIDE!

Tom Johnson, Road & Gravel Captain

Tom, the club's resident fat bike enthusiast, divides his time between riding trail, gravel, and road. He bought his first mountain bike in 1990 and rode it all over the gravel roads and trails of the small Texas town where he grew up. After a 10 year hiatus from cycling, Tom got back into mountain biking again in 2015 when he picked up his first fat bike. And he hasn’t put it down since. You can generally find Tom supporting the Wednesday night shop rides, at Take a Kid Mountain Biking, or riding with his two sons on one of the trails up north. He isn’t hard to spot, just look for the Team BSS MTB jersey, flat pedals, and the largest tires!

In addition to his volunteer work with the club, Tom also donates his time to the Watch D.O.G.S. program at a Leander ISD elementary school and coordinates an annual district-wide “Bike Rodeo” to teach kids about bike safety and promote cycling in the community.

Leigh Busby, Mountain Bike Captain

Leigh is a native Austinite whose love affair with cycling began in the late 90's with a mountain bike. She moved to the road in 2003 and spent her weekends doing charity rides, several centuries, and spent a week with Trek Travel for the Tour de France, where she climbed Mont Ventoux, her most challenging ride to date!

Leigh joined the Team in 2014 and was instantly addicted to the group rides and the amazing folks she met there. A fellow club rider invited her to cyclocross practice and, after just one practice, she purchased a 'cross bike and has been racing since 2014. Leigh also reawakened her passion for mountain biking in 2016 and now races in the TMBRA Spring series each year. She is happiest with dirt and grass under her wheels!

She loves the community and camaraderie of Team Bicycle Sport Shop and wants to share her passion for mountain biking and cyclocross with others, especially female cyclists who are ready to jump from the sidelines to a start line. Leigh is a CPA and works as a Controller at an insurance company.

Nicholas Oberski, Cyclocross Captain

Nicholas is originally from the Midwest and now lives in Austin with his wife, Laura, and two kids, Isaiah and Annie. Cycling provides Nicholas with a way to challenge himself and to explore his surroundings in a new and exciting way. Above all, Nicholas loves cycling for the community it brings both through racing and riding in a group. His desire to be a part of a local cycling community is what brought him to join Bicycle Sport Shop.

You will most likely find Nicholas at the Texas cyclocross races or riding the bike path while pulling his kids in the Burley to get in his "weight training." Feel free to ask him any bike-related questions. He loves to talk tech, training, and technique!

Rachael Oaks, Social Media Captain

In 2013, Rachael wanted to get her health back and decided to start cycling as a way to lose weight. She had no prior experience or knowledge about bikes so she bought one from a big box store. It was hard to pedal, made weird noises, and hurt to ride, but still, she was hooked. A month later, she went to Bicycle Sport Shop Research to inquire about a mountain bike and ways to get further involved in this awesome new hobby. Not only did she walk away with her first quality mountain bike, but she also found a wonderful support network in the cycling community. BSS gave her both confidence in how to ride her bike safely and lasting friendships to enjoy the trails with. The rest has been history! She has done all types of cycling from TMBRA race series to an Ironman 70.3.

Currently, you can find her shredding the local trails or doing urban soul rides around the city.
